An idea about pushing the retro style by starting the game maybe in a metal slug style, very well realized sprites in at least 32 colours. as you character looses health the "retroness" increases. as you become more zombie like your character become more blocky and less colourful. Moving down too 4bit colour and 32x32 amiga bob style then 3bit sprites and then commadore 64 style then maybe spectrum 48k or Atari 600? finally when you become a zombie the screen just becomes a command prompt like the old text adventures, and just says "go east... eat brains"
